The assessment of gestational age: a comparison of different methods from a malaria pregnancy cohort in sub-Saharan Africa

Abstract: BackgroundDetermining gestational age in resource-poor settings is challenging because of limited availability of ultrasound technology and late first presentation to antenatal clinic. Last menstrual period (LMP), symphysio-pubis fundal height (SFH) and Ballard Score (BS) at delivery are therefore often used. We assessed the accuracy of LMP, SFH, and BS to estimate gestational age at delivery and preterm birth compared to ultrasound (US) using a large dataset derived from a randomized controlled trial in pregn… Show more

“…FL measurement was obtained in a plane where the femoral diaphysis was fully visible, with calipers placed on the both ends. All measurements were done according to specific standard operating procedures [31,32]. Gestational age in complete weeks was automatically derived from the four anthropometric measurements according to Hadlock formula [32,33]…”

“…Similar, study also supported by Unger H et al about gestational age group. [11] Gestational age in India is almost invariably confirmed by using earlyfirst-trimester ultrasound scanning, high survival rates are unlikely to reflect an inappropriate attribution of a more mature gestational age. Additionally, our data consistently reveal that early-term birth is associated with poorer survival, health, educational, and social outcomes.…”

“…(4) There are different methods of estimating GA. During the antenatal period, GA is estimated using the rst day of the last menstrual period (LMP) and ultrasonography. (5) LMP is a common method to assess GA if the menstrual cycle is regular. However, in the case of an irregular cycle, LMP may not be an accurate method to estimate the GA. Ultrasound (US) examination is considered to be a gold standard for dating, (5) however, dating using US is considered accurate when it is carried out in the rst trimester with a variation of ± 10 days.…”
