The assessment of depression inventory (ADI): A new instrument used to measure depression and to detect honesty of response

Abstract: We examined the psychometric properties of the Assessment of Depression Inventory (ADI). This instrument assesses depression and also has validity scales that address response honesty. Three studies were conducted. The first describes the development of the ADI. The second compared the concurrent validity of the ADI Depression (Dep) scale with the BDI-II, and the ADI Feigning (Fg) scale responses of psychiatric inpatients with those of a sample of community volunteers asked to feign depression. The third study… Show more

“…Data to date appear to support the Fg scale as a screening measure in the assessment of purposeful exaggeration of depressive symptoms. In the development and validation of the ADI [Mogge and LePage, 2004], groups of naive community volunteers and psychiatric direct care staff were asked to feign depression. The Fg scale was successful in the detection of simulated feigning in these individuals.…”

“…To address these limitations, the Assessment of Depression Inventory [ADI; Mogge and LePage, 2004], a 39-item instrument requiring participants to rate how often they have experienced symptoms in the previous 2-week period, was developed. The goal of the ADI is to provide a brief self-report assessment of depressive symptoms that can be used for initial screening and repeated assessment of progress.…”

“…In an inpatient setting, correlations between the ADI's Fg scale and PAI's Negative Impression Management Scale and Malingering Index were .70 and .69, respectively. [14] Additionally, the Fg scale correlated À.43 and À.32 with the PAI's Positive Impression Management Scale and Defensiveness Index, respectively. [14] Further the ADI's Dep scale correlates at .86 with the BDI-II [13] and has shown good convergent validity in an outpatient setting.…”
