The assessment algorithm of technological feasibility of SOx scrubber installation

Abstract: Abstract. The problematics of installation of sulphur oxides (SO x ) scrubber becomes much relevant for today due to the new Annex VI of MARPOL 73/78 requirements, which sets 0.1% SO x limits by 2015 in Emission Control Area (ECA) and globally to 0.5% in 2020. The research in this field becomes more significant for ship-owners. SO x scrubber is most promising alternative because of lower operating costs and suitability to existing ships. Despite the fact that exhausts gas scrubbing is a common and proven techn… Show more

“…With the exception of maritime transport, for which diesel sulfur standards have remained fairly mild until recently; This circumstance led to the development of processes for removing sulfur oxides from the exhaust gases of marine engines. In connection with the new legislative requirements for reducing SO x emissions globally to 0.5% in 2020, projects are being developed to install sulfur oxide scrubbers [52]. Research in this area is becoming more important for ship-owners.…”

“…As seagoing ships consume approximately 300 million tonnes of high-sulfur fuel a year, switching to low-sulfur fuel creates up to approximately USD 69 billion in extra fuel costs [14]. This will compel ships to install secondary technologies for the exhaust gas treatment of SO X , which also involves a significant capital investment and increased operating costs [15,16].…”
