The Arts and Computational Culture: A landscape view

Abstract

A book on the arts and computational culture, edited by the two authors of this paper, is planned for publication in 2024, as a follow-up to a previous 2019 book on museums and digital culture. The book is to be structured in a series of parts, each with several contributed chapters. This paper surveys each of these areas to provide a landscape view of the overall topic and a brief conclusion on future directions by the authors. What distinguishes this book from others, is its focus on computational culture, a more dynamic area of digital culture with real-time interactions typically in immersive environments, most notably the Metaverse. Recent AI developments such as ChatGPT for textual interaction and DALL.E 2 for image generation are also considered. Overall, this paper presents some of the aspects planned to be covered in the new book.
