THE ARTHROPOD FAUNA ASSOCIATED WITH THE BIRCH BRACKET FUNGUS, POLYPORUS BETULINUS, IN EASTERN CANADA

Abstract: Can. Ent. 100: 1179Ent. 100: -1199Ent. 100: (1968 The adult Arthropoda occurring in, on, or emerging from 2,660 sporophores of the bracket fungus Polyporus betulinus (Bull.) Fr., growing on dead birch, are listed. Collections were made in New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario, and Manitoba. Two hundred and fifty-seven species of Arthropoda, mainly insects and mites, were recorded; over 49,000 specimens were examined. Old, twice-wintered sporophores produce more species and more individuals. In general, the fungus … Show more

“…This predominance of Coleoptera is reported to occur in northern Europe (Thunes et al, 2000;Komonen, 2001Komonen, , 2003a, North-east China (Komonen et al, 2003), the United Kingdom (Paviour-Smith, 1960) and Canada (Pielou & Verma, 1968). This pattern might be a general one for bracket fungi, irrespective of the longevity of the sporocarps (e.g.…”

“…Diptera have a short larval period and dominate in the short lived agaric fungi (Kimura, 1976;Hackman & Meinander, 1979;Lacy, 1984;Yamashita & Hijii, 2003), and Coleoptera a long larval period and dominate long lived polypores (Aphyllophorales; Pielou & Verma, 1968;Hågvar, 1999, Jonsell et al, 2001. In mycophagous drosophilids, the longevity of their fungal host's fruiting body is similar to that of their larval period (Toda & Kimura, 1997).…”

“…These mites crawl through rotting sludge, fi lter-feeding on bacteria, yeasts and very fi ne particulate organic matter (Walter and Kaplan 1990 ). In boreal to cool temperate forests, the acarofauna in long-lived bracket fungi is often dominated by oribatid mites (Pielou and Verma 1968 ;Matthewman and Pielou 1971 ;O'Connell and Bolger 1997 ). Annual and perennial bracket fungi have a much more diverse fauna of oribatid mites than that of the more ephemeral agaric and bolete fungi.…”

“…In temperate forests, the Mesostigmata assemblages on bracket fungi are composed of species in about a dozen genera (Pielou and Verma 1968 ;Matthewman and Pielou 1971 ;Lindquist 1975Lindquist , 1995OConnor 1984 ;O'Connell and Bolger 1997 ;Gwiazdowicz and Lakomy 2002 ). In more tropical realms, a diversity of unusual forms can be found (Moraza and Lindquist 2011 ).…”
