Hospital teachers face a unique set of challenges presented to them by the complex context in which they work. This scoping review aims to identify the evidence published between 2011 and 2021 and to describe the key concepts and characteristics of potential professional learning opportunities that would support hospital teachers in addressing these challenges. Using PRISMA guidelines 423 articles were identified using Academic Search Complete, British Education Index, Education Research Complete, SAGE Journals, Scopus, SpringerLink and Taylor & Francis Journals. 17 studies were selected after the inclusion criteria were applied.Despite the limited amount of research into the role and professional development needs of the hospital teacher, the findings identified a number of common themes that need to be considered when formulating learning opportunities for this cohort of teachers. The study highlights communication skills, context-specific knowledge acquisition, emotional intelligence and self-care along with digital literacy as vital components of any proposed scheme of professional development for hospital teachers.
