The Arizona Market

Abstract: Through this longitudinal study of a historically significant, complex, conflicted and evolving macromarketing space, Bosnia’s Arizona Market, the authors reveal that marketing systems are not merely random artifacts of human behavior; rather, they are adaptive, purposeful, can be pernicious and/or provisioning, and ultimately—if they are to reflect our humanity—must be well integrated into other prosocial systems to affect the best possible outcomes for all stakeholders. By engaging with a marketing system in… Show more

“…Markets and consumption can also be sources of exclusion, stigma, inequality, and social conflict as well as producing meaning, improving well-being and bringing prosperity Krisjanous and Kadirov 2018;Singh et al 2021;Sredl, Shultz, and Brečić 2017). Consumer vulnerability may emerge when encountering distresses in addition to daily tensions or trigger events (Baker and Mason 2012).…”

“…Fanning et al 2020;O'Neill et al 2018). Provisioning systems analysis offers a useful means for marketing systems research to contribute beyond community-based issues or macro social marketing problems and move into contexts that examine the supply of essential resources (Fanning et al 2020;Kennedy 2017;Sredl et al 2017;Williams et al 2020). This paper aims to deepen the connections between macromarketing systems research and provisioning systems research by investigating one such provisioning system.…”

“…The retail marketspecifically the food retail marketis an important market satisfying the basic needs of people (Shultz et al, 2005;Sredl et al, 2017). Given the vital importance of food retail markets in the daily life of refugees, the design of market-based TSIs in this ecosystem would improve the service inclusion of refugees and their well-being (Alkire et al, 2020;Barrios et al, 2016;Sredl et al, 2017). This domain has not been explored enough in the service marketing and the public policy literature (Gardiazabal et al, 2020).…”

“…Public policy literature has investigated the role of policymakers and international aid agencies in transforming people’s lives during social conflicts by improving business infrastructure – such as the food retail ecosystem – in these countries. The macro impacts of various policy packages have been explored in different contexts such as in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and South America (Barrios et al , 2016; DeQuero-Navarro et al , 2020; Shultz et al , 2020; Sredl et al , 2017). One focal point of these studies is showcasing the importance of market-based policy interventions and their long-term impact on market structure and people’s welfare.…”

“…Consumers co-create with firms in both developed and developing countries (Peterson 2022). Surprisingly, consumers co-create with each other and often become vendors themselves in postconflict settings, such as the Arizona Market in Bosnia-formerly the site of armed conflict (Sredl, Shultz, and Brečic 2017). In the realm of sustainability, consumers also enable a circular economy characterized by resource loops that result in less waste (Claudy and Peterson 2022).…”
