The Arecibo Galaxy Environment Survey IX: the isolated galaxy sample

Abstract: We have used the Arecibo L-band Feed Array to map three regions, each of 5 square degrees, around the isolated galaxies NGC 1156, UGC 2082, and NGC 5523. In the vicinity of these galaxies we have detected two dwarf companions: one near UGC 2082, previously discovered by ALFALFA, and one near NGC 1156, discovered by this project and reported in an earlier paper. This is significantly fewer than the 15.4 +1.7 −1.5 that would be expected from the field Hi mass function from ALFALFA or the 8.9±1.2 expected if the … Show more

“…A total of ∼30 000 galaxies are expected to be detected. The first galaxy catalogs are Giovanelli et al (2007), Saintonge et al (2008), Kent et al (2008), Martin et al (2009), Stierwalt et al (2009), the subsequent α.40 catalog (Haynes et al 2011) Cortese et al (2008), Irwin et al (2009), Minchin et al (2010, Davies et al (2011), Taylor et al (2012, 2014a, Minchin et al (2016), Keenan et al (2016); 4. GASS: pointed survey at the Arecibo 305 m telescope (Catinella et al 2012) of 666 galaxies with stellar masses greater than 10 10 M selected from the SDSS spectroscopic and the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) ultraviolet imaging surveys.…”

“…NGC 5523 is a globally isolated galaxy (Karachentsev et al (2011); Minchin et al (2016)) in which we find possible evidence for past interactions with neighboring galaxies. This observation contradicts the simplifying assumption that isolated galaxies form and evolve with minimal interactions from other galaxies (Kapferer et al (2005)).…”

“…NGC 5523 is an apparently normal late-type isolated spiral galaxy (Karachentsev et al (2011); Minchin et al (2016)) with structural properties indicative of galaxy-galaxy interactions. While isolated galaxies are often considered to evolve with minimal interactions from surrounding galaxies (Jog & Combes (2009)), we show that NGC 5523 offers a potential counterexample to this assumption.…”

“…Could such asymmetrical features be due to internal processes ? Unfortunately comparable studies of isolated galaxies are very rare (three isolated galaxies were targeted with AGES, none of which show extensions -see Minchin et al 2016). Even then, the authors can seldom (if ever) rule out external processes (e.g.…”
