“…This is an important finding that not only reflects the literature in general, but also has implications for processing style and task difficulty in ASD participants. This supports many previous studies reporting atypical lateralization of language regions in ASD [Dawson et al, 1986;Eyler et al, 2012;Flagg et al, 2005;Gage et al, 2009;Herbert et al, 2002Herbert et al, , 2004Kana & Wadsworth, 2012;Kleinhans et al, Figure 4. (A) Between-group differences in brain activity during language tasks with equal group performance.…”

“…Importantly, additional analyses based on task performance indicate that increased RIFG and RSTG activity (but not left hemisphere hypo-activity) was consistently seen in language processing tasks in which the ASD group performed worse than the TD group. This is significant given that previous literature has been inconsistent, associating altered lateralization with poorer [e.g., Dawson et al, 1986], equivalent [e.g., Kana & Wadsworth, 2012;Saban-Bezalel & Mashal, 2015], and better [Redcay & Courchesne, 2008] language outcomes. However, the study that linked increased RH activation to superior language functioning [Redcay & Courchesne, 2008] examined toddlers with ASD, while others have focused primarily on older children and adults.…”

“…Deficits in integrating the spoken word with non-verbal communication (Kana 2012), poor recognition and interpretation of facial expressions, low self-esteem, inability to resolve conflict and poor recognition of likely consequences can contribute to social isolation, manipulation, exploitation and maltreatment of the individual.…”
