“…However, unlike the western United States, where T. tubifex is found in both polluted and relatively pristine environments, proximity to organic pollution sources appears to be a requirement for the occurrence of detectable T. tubifex populations in Pennsylvania. The detection of overlapping populations of I. templetoni and T. tubifex only below sources of organic enrichment in Pennsylvania suggests that the two species may substitute for one another along a pollution gradient (Milbrink 1980;Spencer 1980). Although our study was not specifically designed to evaluate the seasonal patterns of maturity among tubificids, our results indicate that sampling for mature Tubificidae in Pennsylvania should be undertaken during the late fall through spring.…”

“…Lumbriculus variegatus is an ecologically relevant oligochaete, occurring throughout Europe and the United States (Spencer, 1980). It is an epibenthic/benthic organism subject to contaminant exposure via all routes of concern, including ingestion of sediment particles (Phipps et al, 1993).…”

“…Several scientists have described new taxa from Turkey, yet we believe additional taxa, including as yet undescribed species, have yet to be discovered in the country, which certainly could include one or more cosmopolitan species. According to the distribution charts prepared by Timm (Timm 1980) Aulodrilus pluriseta (Piguet) were also considered to be cosmopolitan species by Spencer (Spencer 1980). All of these species had previously been recorded from different areas in Turkey.…”
