The applications of robotic surgery in urology

Abstract: The incorporation of robots into surgical technology is a relatively recent development. The robot-assisted surgery is in its early years today, however indications for its use in surgery are rapidly expanding. New robotic surgical applications and techniques are being developed and reported everyday. With the increase in their use and incorporation of new technological advances into robotic systems in the future, there will be continued development of new surgical approaches with improved patient outcomes. “…Threedimensional magnified vision, enhanced ergonomics, and the use of an endo-wrist instrument with seven degrees of freedom in range of motion are the main advantages. High costs, inability to understand tissue or suture tension due to lack of tactile sensation, and collision of robotic arms with each other or the assistant port are disadvantages of this technique (4). In this study, we present our experience with 267 consecutive RALP procedures and assess the perioperative and postoperative outcomes.…”

“…Contrary to two-dimensional image provided by standard laparoscopic systems, robotic systems offer 3-dimensional image and sense of depth for the surgeon. In addition, while standard laparoscopic equipments provide the surgeon a mobility in four directions, robotic systems offer a freedom of movement in six even seven directions similar to the human hand and wrist (3). Despite all these advantages, complications also occurred in robot-assisted laparoscopic surgeries and reported in the literature mainly by using Clavien-Dindo classification system.…”
