The application of the Risdon approach for mandibular condyle fractures

Abstract: BackgroundMany novel approaches to mandibular condyle fracture have been reported, but there is a relative lack of reports on the Risdon approach. In this study, the feasibility of the Risdon approach for condylar neck and subcondylar fractures of the mandible is demonstrated.MethodsA review of patients with mandibular condylar neck and subcondylar fractures was performed from March 2008 to June 2012. A total of 25 patients, 19 males and 6 females, had 14 condylar neck fractures and 11 subcondylar fractures.Re… Show more

“…In 1963, Ginestet et al [11] illustrated a curve-shaped incision at the mandibular angle for extraoral ectopic wisdom teeth extraction, without detailed description of the procedure. Using Risdon approach, Nam et al [12] described treatment of subcondylar fracture trough submandibular incision placed 3 cm or more below the inferior border of the mandible because of the close vicinity of the MBFN. This is a classic submandibular approach that is technically demanding because of longer route to fracture site and more difficulties in fragment reducing and plating.…”

“…Açık cerrahi seçenekler arasında Risdon yaklaşımı da uygulanabilen yöntemlerden biridir. [17] Ancak bizim olgumuzda yapılacak olan insizyon aşağıda kalacağı için kırık hattına yaklaşımın daha zor olacağı düşü-nüldü ve yüksek yaklaşım -Blair insizyonu-tercih edildi.…”

“…[12] The submandibular approach provides a wide field of vision, but the length of the incision scar is its most important disadvantage. [13] The preauricular approach is generally suitable for intracapsular condylar fractures, and the fracture line must be extended over the inferior of the ear in subcondylar fractures. The retromandibular transparotid approach has significant advantages for accessing subcondylar and high ramus fractures.…”
