The application of signal averaging to the NIBP oscillometric waveform

Abstract: This paper describes the application of Ensemble Signal Averaging (ESA) to the problem of motion artifact reduction in the oscillometric non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) signal. The algorithm described addresses the problems of preserving the cuff pressure (CP) vs pulse size envelope shape, dealing with the case of a long pulse delay, using limited CPU resources, and optimizing the determination cycle time.

“…frequency-domain filtering methods or Kalman filter were generally applied to reject the motion artifact [3][4][5]. However, since the frequency bandwidth of motion artifact overlaps with the oscillometric signal, it is not easy to reject the effect of the motion artifact successfully.…”
