Plankton includes the primary producers and consumers that are critical for healthy ecosystem function in the marine realm. My objective was to identify the major contributions of the Leigh Marine Laboratory to our broader understanding of planktonic assemblages. Significant contributions were made prior to 1990 on the ecology of larval fishes. From the 1990s the focus changed to the sensory biology of larval invertebrates and fishes, with a strong emphasis given to the role of reef sound in attracting potential settlers. Both early and post 1980s research has been highly influential in a paradigm shift away from passively drifting larvae that have little control over their fate. Important contributions have also been made on the dynamics of nutrientÁphytoplankton interactions, larval development and aquaculture. Opportunities abound for future research on the dynamics of planktonic assemblages in shelf waters and in changing seas.

The groups of organisms included in the algae and their extensive diversity are discussed. The algae of New Zealand can be divided into three main ecological-morphological groups: the freshwater algae of which we have about 2080 species, the marine micro-algae with approximately 700 species and the marine macro-algae, the best known group, with about 900 species.The present knowledge of the marine macro-algae is reviewed. The current marine algal Floras are not complete and are inadequate for positive identification of many species. Much taxonomy remains to be done. Few studies on the biogeography, life history, cytology, ultrastructure. and ecology of marine algae have been completed.Marine micro-algae and freshwater algae are similarly not well documented. Although checklists exist for some of these algal groups, critical taxonomy and Rora writing is still required to assist with identifications.Recent studies on the chemical analysis of algae for agars and carrageenans, the testing of compounds that have anti-bacterial and antiviral activity, and the toxins of poisonous algae are summarised. The necessity to study taxonomically both marine and freshwater microalgae and to monitor the conditions of growth, particularly of toxic algal blooms which inevitably have economic importance, is emphasised.

A Bloom of the Planktonic Diatom, Cerataulina pelagica, off the Coast of Northeastern New Zealand in 1983, and its Contribution to an Associated Mortality of Fish and Benthic Fauna key words: marine phytoplankton, Southern Oscillation Index Abstract A bloom of Cerataulina pelagica dominated the sea area off the north-east coast of New Zealand for three months in the summer of 1982-83, and has been related t o unusually calm conditions associated with an unusually low Southern Oscillation Index. Deaths of benthic shellfish during the bloom were attributed t o anoxia induced by the bacterial decay of the diatom cells. Death of bony fish caught on long-lines was attributed to anoxia and the clogging of the gilla with mucilage produced by the diatoms.
