The application of mHealth to mental health: opportunities and challenges

Abstract: Advances in smartphones and wearable biosensors enable real-time psychological, behavioural, and physiological data to be gathered in increasingly precise and unobtrusive ways. Thus, moment-to-moment information about an individual's moods, cognitions, and activities can be collected, in addition to automated data about their whereabouts, behaviour, and physiological states. In this report, we discuss the potential of these new mobile digital technologies to transform mental health research and clinical practi… Show more

“…As interest in mHealth for mental health treatment grows [22-25], it is important to evaluate which approaches are viable for different clinical populations (and when) and to gain a better understanding of the variables that may facilitate or hinder patient engagement with these novel interventions. This study provides evidence that individuals with schizophrenia-spectrum disorders can actively engage with a clinically supported mobile phone intervention for up to 6 months following hospital discharge; that gender, race, age, and history of psychiatric hospitalization were associated with their level of engagement; and that system-initiated mHealth functions led to proportionally more exposure to treatment content than on-demand tools, but that both were used regularly.…”

“…This implies that network-wide omics approaches are needed to capture the interactivity of these multiple overlapping elements [22]. This neurobiology information can be aggregated to the now abundant behavioural data available, including thorough mobile technology [23]. Psychiatry is concerned with the diagnosis, causes and treatment of mental disorders.…”

“…The importance of this trend is shown by the considerable interest in new technologies among players in the mental health field. Many references in the scientific literature are interested, for example, in the important potential for transforming and improving the therapeutic and preventive health practices of e-health technologies [6]. Not only are they likely to improve the effectiveness of care, they could also change the very nature of care [7].…”
