Continuous professional development is a process that requires constant and active learning for a teacher throughout his/her professional life. In this process, teachers are expected to perform activities aiming at increasing both their professional development and the quality of teaching within the classroom. One of these is lesson study. This study examined the effect of the lesson study as a tool to improve professional development of teachers, as well as student learning. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used. Participants were two primary school teachers. Data were obtained from observations and field notes taken during the teaching of the course alongside data coming from teachers' reflective diaries and interviews held with the teachers. The findings of the study showed that the lesson study activity contributed considerably both to the professional development of the teachers and the students' learning. Thanks to the studentcentered activities (narration, picturizing and drama) which were carried out within the scope of the applied research lesson, almost all students in the class were actively involved in the lesson, especially those who had relatively worse reading comprehension skills and who had difficulty in self-expression started to give better answers and also expressed what they read in a better manner. In addition, teachers stated that lesson study contributed to their professional development by helping them solve the problem they faced paving the way for the application of different teaching methods and activities, collaboration with each other, exchanging of opinions about the problem, and recognizing different methods, techniques and practices pertaining to the profession.

Even though various professional development practices are provided for language teachers worldwide, these practices are still considered ineffective in addressing teachers' needs in their classrooms. The effectiveness of these practices is stalled when teachers do not actively engage in their professional development processes. When language teachers are not involved as active decision makers regarding their own professional development practices, the outcomes may not be as desirable as policymakers plan. Considering the deficiencies of the current language teacher professional development practices in Turkey, this paper provides a systematic review of lesson study as a professional development model for language teachers which promotes agency and reflective practice. Comparing the current practice of lesson study in Turkey to the international practices reported in the literature, this review suggests that lesson study has potential to support teacher professional development in the country in alignment with the educational visions of decision makers. Given the empowering dimension of lesson study model both in terms of content and form, it can be adopted as a model for effective and sustainable language teacher professional development.

The study aims to develop students’ higher cognitive skills e.g. analysis, synthesis and assessment and to increase their academic successes by reflecting their cognitive skills in psychomotor skills in practice with the help of lesson study. Therefore, the aim of the study is to increase students’ English as a foreign language learning level. Action research was used in the study. “English Achievement Test” and “Semi-Structured Interview Form” developed by the researchers were used as data collection instruments. English achievement test was used as pre-test and post-test to define students’ English language levels, and semi-structured interview form was used to determine teachers’ views about lesson study practice. According to research result, lesson study has increased students’ learning levels significantly. Moreover, teachers stated that lesson study was highly beneficial and affected their professional development in a positive way. It was stated by teachers in the study that lesson study had the teachers a chance to observe and assess their teaching qualities and so, it made the students’ learning levels increase significantly. Furthermore, all of the teachers agreed that lesson study as an in-service training model could be an approach used for both other lessons and nationally.
