“…The flooding tides are regular and semi‐diurnal. Based on 31‐year records (1978–2008) at the nearest tidal gauge station (Waigaoqiao, approximately 35 km from the study site), local mean sea level is 2.17 m, and the mean tidal range is 2.48 m with the maximum tidal range of 4.43 m (Yuan et al. 2011).…”

The natural vegetation was dominated by the annual plant Scirpus mariqueter Wang et Tang (Cyperaceae) in the low-mid-parts of intertidal zones and by Phragmites australis in the mid-high-parts.…”

“…Invasions due to anthropogenic impacts are also an ecological problem for coastal wetland ecosystem (Gedan et al, 2009). For example, the invasive species Spartina alterniflora occupies large areas of southeast coast of China (Yuan et al, 2011) and Phragmites australis has invaded the east coast of North America. Both invasive species were introduced through human activity.…”

“…Second, the rapid spread of Spartina should be effectively controlled and restored into waterbird-suitable habitats (Scirpus wetlands). Yuan et al (2011) suggested that Spartina could be effectively controlled and eradicated by cutting its above-ground parts at the key stage of growth (i.e., the blooming period in July) combined with water logging at a proper water depth (>50 cm). Third, appropriate management for aquaculture ponds is needed to improve habitat quality for different waterbirds during different migratory seasons.…”
