Introduction: Robot-assisted therapy is an innovative approach to upper-limb rehabilitation that uses intensive, repetitive, interactive, and individualized practice as an optimal strategy to enhance motor learning. An example of upper-limb robot-assisted therapy is the myoelectric orthosis MyoPro (Myomo Inc, Cambridge, USA). It is a custom-fabricated myoelectric elbow-wristhand orthosis (MEWHO) with built-in surface sensors that detect the user's electromyographic (EMG) signals during muscle contraction. Studies on the MEWHO have focused mostly on elderly chronic stroke patients. None have discussed its use on the adolescent population and the considerations they face in wearing the orthosis. Case Presentation: A 15-year-old male 10th grade student with a diagnosis of right spastic hemiplegia secondary to cerebral palsy was prescribed a MEWHO because of muscle weakness of his right upper extremity, decreased functional status, and fine motor skills deficits. Results: After two occupational therapy cycles, the patient demonstrated improvements in functional strength and performance of physical activities. Despite these improvements, the patient only used the MEWHO during therapy and was less engaged with its use at home and school. Discussion: This case report presents insights on why the patient was not as proficient and interested in using the orthosis at home and school. Recommendations to address these issues include peer modeling, community outings, early intervention, and the use of family-centered approaches. Future studies are also suggested to further understand MEWHO use and the considerations for successful orthotic management in this group of patients. The study looked at 13 randomized control trials and concluded that RT showed positive outcomes in enhancing motor recovery of the paralyzed limb. We investigated the clinical efficacy on family functioning and parental satisfaction of a short-term family-centered workshop for children with developmental delays.A total of 32 children with developmental delays and their parents participated in 2-hour weekly group therapy sessions over 6 weeks. The workshop was conducted by rehabilitation professionals and teachers using a family-centered multidisciplinary approach. Both before and after the 6-week workshop, the parents were administered the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL) Family Impact Module, the PedsQL Healthcare Satisfaction Module, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, and the World Health Organization Quality of Life brief assessment instrument. Overall satisfaction with the workshop was also evaluated.Significant improvements were noted in physical aspect (P = 0.03), communication (P = 0.002), and daily activities (P = 0.04) in the PedsQL Family Impact Module, and in communication (P = 0.03) and technical skills (P = 0.05) in the PedsQL Healthcare Satisfaction Module. Overall satisfaction with the workshop was rated as very high. There was no significant effect on psychological distress or quality of life.Short-term family-centered workshops for children with developmental delays improved family functioning and the parental perception of satisfaction, including health care satisfaction.

Cette étude longitudinale documente l’évolution des habiletés et des pratiques de communication des parents issus de familles ayant des besoins complexes avant, pendant et après que leur enfant fréquente un service de garde où se déroule un stage novateur. Mis en place au sein d’un programme d’éducation à l’enfance il vise à préparer les futures éducatrices à établir des relations avec les familles, en partenariat avec un centre jeunesse. Seize parents et quatre formatrices ont participé à l’étude. Les données proviennent d’un questionnaire sur les interactions des parents avec le personnel de la Halte-garderie. Les résultats suggèrent que les habiletés relationnelles des parents avec le personnel de la Halte-garderie se sont améliorées entre le début et la fin du programme et que les habilités parentales se sont aussi améliorées de façon significative. La discussion aborde le type de soutien offert aux familles à la Halte-garderie qui influe positivement sur la qualité des relations entretenues entre les étudiantes-stagiaires et les parents en situation de vulnérabilité ainsi qu’entre les parents et leurs enfants.
