Summary In addition to being a good food source, freshwater snails are considered one of the positively and negatively influencing invertebrates on the environment. Several biotic and abiotic factors are thought to affect the distribution and the dynamics of these snails. Freshwater snails are the most dominant and conspicuous individuals of the freshwater biota in Damietta Governorate. In this study, freshwater snails were collected monthly from 5 geographically and environmentally different sites at Damietta Governorate at the north of Egypt during June 2017-May 2018. Seven snail species; Lanistes carinatus, Lanistes varicus, Pila wernei, Segmentorbis angustus, Melanoides tuberculata, Biomphalaria alexandrina, and Gabbiella senoriansis, were identified. Lanistes carinatus was the most abundant species (56.4%) in the collection sites. Besides, Al-Inaniyyah village had the highest snail species abundance and variety. The abundance of the most recorded species varied seasonally; the highest abundance was recorded during summer while the lowest was during winter. The abundance of some snail species correlated positively or negatively with some physico-chemical parameters; water temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, total dissolved salts, and electrical conductivity. Two types of trematode cercariae; gymnocephalus cercariae and xiphidiocercariae, were harvested from Lanistes carinatus. The highest prevalence of both cercarial types was detected during summer. The correlation between the prevalence of both cercarial types and the physico-chemical parameters were determined. Xiphidiocercariae were the most predominant cercarial type in Damietta Governorate. Our findings suggest that the invasion of some freshwater snails is likely to be the cause of the low prevalence or complete absence of some medically important intermediate snail hosts. We recommend further characterization of the distribution of freshwater snails and the interrelationships among them in Egypt, and suggest a controlled use of selected snail species to combat their medically important analogues.

First morphological and molecular identification of the cercaria of Stomylotrema vicarium from the endemic apple snail Pomacea americanista

The adult fluke Stomylotrema vicarium (Stomylotrematidae, Microphalloidea) was described for the first time in Theristicus caerulescens in 1901, but the complete life cycle has remained unknown to date. Here, we found a stomylotrematid trematode in the digestive gland of the endemic apple snail Pomacea americanista. The digestive gland's tubuloacini were compressed by the trematode larvae placed on connective tissues and haemocoel spaces. Non-virgulate, stylet-bearing cercariae showed three pairs of penetration glands with a body, oral sucker and stylet morphometrically similar to those of stylet-bearing, unencysted young metacercariae of S. vicarium found in the aquatic coleopteran Megadytes glaucus, and at a lesser extent with cercariae of S. gratiosus found in the apple snail Pomacea maculata. The larvae molecular phylogeny was inferred using the markers rRNA 28S and ITS1, being these sequences grouped with the sequences of S. vicarium obtained from adult flukes. Together, these findings indicate that the life cycle of S. vicarium begins in P. americanista, thus supporting the hypothesis that the ampullariid snails act as a first intermediate host.

The apple snails Pomacea canaliculata, Pomacea diffusa and Pomacea maculate (Gastropoda: Caenogastropoda: Ampullariidae) are invasive pests causing massive economic losses and ecological damage. We sequenced and characterized the complete mitochondrial genomes of these snails to conduct phylogenetic analyses based on comparisons with the mitochondrial protein coding sequences of 47 Caenogastropoda species. The gene arrangements, distribution and content were canonically identical and consistent with typical Mollusca except for the tRNA-Gln absent in P. diffusa. An identifiable control region (d-loop) was absent. Bayesian phylogenetic analysis indicated that all the Ampullariidae species clustered on the same branch. The genus Pomacea clustered together and then with the genus Marisa. The orders Architaenioglossa and Sorbeoconcha clustered together and then with the order Hypsogastropoda. Furthermore, the intergenic and interspecific taxonomic positions were defined. Unexpectedly, Ceraesignum maximum, Dendropoma gregarium, Eualetes tulipa and Thylacodes squamigerus, traditionally classified in order Hypsogastropoda, were isolated from the order Hypsogastropoda in the most external branch of the Bayesian inference tree. The divergence times of the Caenogastropoda indicated that their evolutionary process covered four geological epochs that included the Quaternary, Neogene, Paleogene and Cretaceous periods. This study will facilitate further investigation of species identification to aid in the implementation of effective management and control strategies of these invasive species.
