The Apple SnailPomacea maculata(Caenogastropoda: Ampullariidae) as the Intermediate Host ofStomylotrema gratiosus(Trematoda: Stomylotrematidae) in Brazil: The First Report of a Mollusc Host of a Stomylotrematid Trematode

Abstract: Trematodes belonging to the family Stomylotrematidae are intestinal parasites of birds. Despite the worldwide distribution and diversity of host species, the first intermediate host remains unknown. For a survey of parasites of Pomacea maculata , snails were collected from the municipality of São Vicente Férrer, state of Maranhão, northeastern Brazil. In the present study, the xiphidiocercariae shed from these snails were used in the experimental infection of the water bug Belostoma plebejum. The insect mortal… Show more

“…Larvae of trematodes (cercariae) emerge from the snail tissue and might find the suitable secondary intermediate host or definitive host ( Bdir & Adwan, 2011 ; Chantima et al ., 2018). The genera of Biomphalaria , Bulinus , Lymnaea , Melanoides , Pomacea , and Asolene are important intermediate hosts for the trematode parasites Schistosoma , Stomylotrema , Echinochasmus , Phaneropsolus , and Fasciola ( Besprozvannykh et al ., 2013 ; Dida et al ., 2014 ; Pinto et al ., 2015 ; Dellagnola et al ., 2019 ). Therefore, freshwater snails perform significant roles in the human and veterinary health ( Okafor & Ngang, 2004 ).…”

“…To date, two species of the congeneric stomylotrematid flukes S. gratiosus and S. vicarium have been associated with the apple snails P. maculata (Pinto et al, 2015) and P. americanista (this work), respectively. The xiphidiocercaria of S. gratiosus was similar to the non-virgulate Cercaria peculiaristylata from Pomacea glauca (Nasir and Acuña, 1966) and Cercaria marisa from the ampullariid Marisa cornuarietis of Venezuela (Nasir and Díaz, 1968).…”

“…Control and management strategies have been largely based on this species [ 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 ]. In contrast, there are few studies of P. maculata and P. diffusa [ 15 , 16 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ].…”
