The antioxidant role of u.v. stabilisers

Abstract: -The mechantsrns of action of the more important classes of uv stabtltsers for polyoleftns are considered in the light of present views on the mechanisms of antioxidant behaviour. The metal thiolate catalytic peroxide decomposers (PD-C) are seen to be effective uv stabilisers in their own right and as synergtsts with 'uv absorbers' . Chain-breaking antioxidants (CB-A), of which the hindered nttroxyl radicals are the most Important, are very effective as slngle component uv stabilisers but their precursors, the … Show more

“…Therefore, the morphological analysis correlates well with the FTIR spectroscopy results shown above and confirmed the UV light stability provided by GA to the bio-HDPE films that can thus improve the shelf life of the green polyolefin. The antioxidant effect of GA is considered to also protect the free residues that are generated during polymer synthesis with improved degradation stability [74]. Indeed, UV stabilizers have always been categorized as a subgroup within the antioxidant additive group.…”

“…Their principal action mode in the degradation processes have been studied and found to act as free-radicals scavenger and hydroperoxide deactivator. 20,21 The film samples were placed in an accelerated aging UVchamber consisting of four UV fluorescent tubes with emission between 280 and 320 nm. All the samples were exposed to UV radiation at same conditions of humidity and at temperature of 40 o C.…”

“…It was found by Scott and co-workers [15,16] that aliphatic amine complexes of the zinc dithiocarbamates were about twice as effective as photostabilisers than the parent dithiocarbamates in polypropylene, although the amines alone had little UV stabilising activity.
