Abstract: In the last decade, several methods have been developed for assaying the antioxidant activity of saliva, indicating an increasing interest of researchers and clinicians. Unfortunately, systematic studies of saliva are still lacking, even in healthy populations.

“…Saliva , a heterogenous fluid, apart from cleaning , lubricating, and buffering properties also acts as a first line of defense against free radical mediated oxidative stress involving a variety of reactions including lipid peroxidation [16]. So, saliva was used as a biological sample in monitoring lipid peroxidation in the present study.…”

“…Recently it has been claimed that the imbalances in levels of free radicals, reactive oxygen species and antioxidants in saliva may play an important role in the onset and development dental caries [5]. Hence evaluation of those factors in saliva that may increase the risk of individuals to dental caries, can pave way to make recommendations that will cater specifically to needs of an individual [6].…”

“…Many compounds, such as albumin, transferrin or uric acid contribute to the antioxidant properties of saliva [31], but of special interest here are glutathione-S-transferases which can suppress free radicals formation. Under-expression of GSTP in ED patients is therefore probably one element contributing to this reduced TAS.…”
