The Antinociceptive Effects of Tualang Honey in Male Sprague-Dawley Rats: A Preliminary Study

Abstract: Tualang honey (蜂蜜 Fēng Mì) is known to have anti-inflammatory property, but its antinociceptive property has not been extensively investigated. In this study, we examined the preemptive effects on administering different doses of Tualang honey and prednisolone on the nociceptive response in male Sprague-Dawley rats. Thirty-five male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into five groups (n = 7) and each group received either distilled water, Tualang honey (0.2, 1.2 or 2.4 g/kg) or prednisolone (10 mg/kg) for 10 … Show more

“…Glucocortocoid such as prednisolone suppressed IL-6 and IL-8 productions by inhibiting gene transcription of both cytokines [56]. The direct binding of glucocorticoid or GCR to glucocorticoid responsive elements in the promoter region of the gene may eventually modulate several genes expression involving in inflammatory responses [57][58][59].…”

“…It increases caspase 3 activation and poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) cleavage, modulates the expression of pro-and anti-apoptotic proteins, induces the expression of p53, caspase 3, and proapoptotic protein Bax and downregulates the expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl2 [46] . As for the anti-inflammatory activity of honey, it has been proven that honey reduces the release of nitrous oxide, cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-2, IL-6, and PGE2) and histamines which reduces inflammation and as well as pain [58,81]. Antinociceptive property of honey is due to its ability to reduce plasma prostaglandins such as thromboxane B2, PGE2 and PGF2a [58,82] .…”

The low water content and low pH (acidic) of honey due to the formation of gluconic acid results to an environment that is not favourable for bacteria to grow thus contributing to its antibacterial property [59] apart from having high viscosity that limits the solubility of oxygen and substances.…”

“…Manuka honey also shows antioxidant property as it attenuates H 2 O 2 -induced oxidative stress in human whole blood cell (Zivkovic et al 2018). Tualang honey, apart from having anticancer, antiinflammatory, antioxidant and wound healing properties, it also possess antinociceptive property in human and rats (Abdullah et al 2015;Aziz et al 2014). It was reported to improve cognitive function and memory performance (Al-Rahbi et al 2014;Othman et al 2011).…”
