Evidence of similar arrest of tubular maturation demonstrated by the detection of other tubular antigens has been presented previously (Linder 1969, Fleming & Gibson 1986. It is of interest that the only case in which an advanced degree of proximal tubular differentiation was seen, as determined by AGF 4.48 and AGF 4.36 binding, was a familial nephroblastoma which also showed an advanced degree of mesenchymal differentiation.…”

The distribution in renal tumours of 3-fucosyl-N-acetyl lactosamine has been studied by using the monoclonal antibodies AGF 4.36 and AGF 4.48 and immunoperoxidase methods on tissue sections. Seven of 19 nephroblastomas and 12 of 30 renal cell carcinomas contained the epitope. In nephroblastomas the epitope was found on the terminals of type B tubules in six cases and in one case on the type A or neoplastic tubules. In renal carcinoma the antigen was found on the surface of tumour cells. The results suggest that in kidneys bearing nephroblastomas ureteric bud elements may grow into the tumour from the adjacent kidney.

Brain tumours extracts have been studied against anti brain immune sera and antiglioblastoma immune sera. The common antigens that are present in all organs are present in tumour extracts, but the brain specific antigens studied were found in the extracts in a small quantity. Lactoferrin was also present in the tumour extracts. No '' carcinoembryonic '' antigen was detected. The antiglioblastoma immune sera were also able to detect an hepatosplenic antigen at a trace level in some tumours. The origin of this antigen and of lactoferrin is discussed. Two antisera reacting respectively with the brush border region of proximal renal tubules (BB) and Tamm‐Horsfall protein in distal tubules (TH) were employed for immunofluorescence studies of these antigens in 31 human kidney tumors of different types. All 15 cortical adenomas and 10 of 11 carcinomas contained the BB antigen but not the TH antigen. One anaplastic carcinoma studied lacked the BB antigen and together with one granular cell carcinoma showed weak TH antigenicity. The two Wilms' tumors examined contained both antigens. The findings provide additional evidence that the adenomas and carcinomas arise from proximal tubular epithelium and Wilms' tumors from more primitive metanephric cells.
