Aims: Infection of wounds by microorganisms can prolong wound healing process and result in wound associated complications. Therefore, wound treatment entails the use of antimicrobial agents usually administered directly on the wound where possible to prevent microbial colonization. Traditionally, various plants have been used in wound treatment in different regions of the world. This study evaluated the contribution of the antibacterial activity of four plants commonly use in the treatment of wound in southwestern Nigeria to their ethnobotanically acclaimed wound healing property. Methodology: The antibacterial activity of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of the selected plants (Chromolaena odorata, Sida acuta, Ageratum conyzoides and Carica papaya) was evaluated using the agar well diffusion assay. Wound isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus, two commonly isolated Gram negative and Gram-positive bacteria from wounds were used for this study. Antibacterial activity was inferred for plant extracts that achieved zone of inhibition ≥ 7 mm in diameter (size of the well inclusive). Results: Generally, the ethanolic extracts of the selected plants showed better extraction yield and antibacterial activity compared to the aqueous extracts. The ethanolic extracts of the four selected plants demonstrated antibacterial activity against the test organisms used while only the aqueous extracts of Chromolaena odorata and Sida acuta showed activity against both test organisms. The aqueous extracts of Ageratum conyzoides and Carica papaya only showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus. Conclusion: Results from this study demonstrated that the antibacterial activity of the selected plants contributes to their acclaimed wound healing property. Although there is need to investigate the role of other non-antibacterial properties of the plants that may be associated with wound healing to fully understand the usefulness of the plants in wound treatment.

Objective: Evaluation of antibacterial potential of aqueous and ethanol extracts of Solanum nigrum L., Eclipta alba (L.) Hassk., Achyranthes aspera L., Sida acuta Burm.f., Justicia adhatoda L. (Syn. Adhatoda vasica Nees), Boerhavia diffusa L. and Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal against human pathogenic bacteria Enterococcus faecalis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and Methods: Powdered form of the whole plant of each species was extracted in aqueous and ethanol solvents. The antibacterial activity experiment was performed using agar well diffusion method. A dose of 50µl, 100µl and 150µl of each extract (aqueous and ethanol) were tested. Results: Only the ethanol extracts have shown activity against test organisms. The 50µl and 100µl doses of extracts were not much effective against all the bacteria. Thus 150µl volume was selected for further study. The ethanol extract of Adhatoda vasica has yielded maximum zone of inhibition 24±1.7mm and 22±2.1mm against S. aureus and E. coli, respectively. Type AA3 of A. aspera and SN3 of S. nigrum were the most effective against E. faecalis with inhibition zones 22±2.2mm and 21±2.2mm, respectively. Similarly, B. diffusa has shown maximum inhibition against P. aeruginosa. Conclusion: The present study suggests the use of ethanol extract since none of the aqueous extracts have shown activity against all the tested bacteria. The difference in activity of different plant extracts may be due to variable chemical composition of the plant species. The plant species can be selected based on the bacterial species to be investigated. Further studies can be planned to understand the bioactive molecules responsible for antibacterial activity.

Over population is using herbal medicines, Plant medicines may be beneficial but are not completely harmless. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of antimicrobial activity of Aqueous Citrus lemon friut Extracts against different microbial isolates of pathogenic bacteria Klebsiella penomniae and Escherichia coli which identified at educational El marj Hospital.Citrus lemon juice extract appaered a secondry metabolic activity agaist Gram-negative bacterial were studied.The affect of cold Citrus lemon extract was recorded. The water extracts of all the materials screened showed various inhibitory effects, the results have shown that the main Inhibition zone was 1.8 cm in diameter with E.coli and 2.5 cm in diameter with Klebsiella penomniae respectively. In addition, the Minimum Inhibition concentratin (MIC) was 1.6 cm in diameter, 1.5 cm in diameter and 1.4 cm in diameter with E.coli and 1.2 , 1.1 cm and 1 cm in diameter with Klebsiella penomniae. respectively when compared with control Also the resluts showed no resistance of these isolatse against lemon that could be used for prevention of various diseases caused by these organisms.
