The antibacterial activity of chloroxylenol in combination with ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid

Abstract: SUMMLARYThe bactericidal activity of RBA 777 has been found to vary with both the cultural and environmental test conditions against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and to a lesser extent against Staphylococcus aureus. These variations may explain certain anomalies in earlier work regarding the activity of chloroxylenol-based products. The addition of EDTA to RBA 777 has brought about an improvement in the performance against P. aeruginosa and this activity is confirmed in vivo. Previous reports have already illustrate… Show more

“…Chloroxylenol has also been used as a skin and wound antiseptic. It is bactericidal against most Gram‐positive bacteria but it is less effective against staphylococci and Gram‐negative bacteria; it is also fungicidal and viricidal but it has little activity on spores 12 –15 . Chloroxylenol in the recommended solutions is generally nonirritant; sensitization, however, has been reported and it is included in many patch tests series 16 –18…”

“…However, the application of chloroxylenol as an antimicrobial agent for the finishing of textiles to develop bioactive textiles has not yet been explored. 11 According to current state-of-the-art knowledge, existing bioactive agents have been applied to textiles using crosslinkers, 12 binders, 13 and coupling agents, 14,15 and the maximum washing durability of such finished bioactive textiles is up to 20 rounds of domestic laundry. Because of their poor washing durability, the applied biocides continuously leached from the fabric into the drain during each wash cycle, which had a detrimental effect on the microbes present in the sewage that were necessary for sewage biodegradation.…”
