The Anti-Inflammatory, Phytoestrogenic, and Antioxidative Role ofLabisia pumilain Prevention of Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

Abstract: Osteoporosis is characterized by skeletal degeneration with low bone mass and destruction of microarchitecture of bone tissue which is attributed to various factors including inflammation. Women are more likely to develop osteoporosis than men due to reduction in estrogen during menopause which leads to decline in bone-formation and increase in bone-resorption activity. Estrogen is able to suppress production of proinflammatory cytokines such as IL-1, IL-6, IL-7, and TNF-α. This is why these cytokines are elev… Show more

“…This is in line with the fact that estrogen is able to offer antioxidant protection of lipoproteins and increase the expression of these enzymes in bone cells [56]. On the other hand, LP stimulated the antioxidant enzymes activity and decreased the MDA level via its phytoestrogenic and antioxidative properties [22]. Our findings may also be explained by free radical scavenging properties of LP as reported in the previous study [46].…”

“…Estrogen is able to suppress the production of proinflammatory cytokines like IL-1, IL-6, IL-7 and TNF-α. This is why these cytokines are elevated in postmenopausal women [8]. Treatment focuses on slowing down or stopping the mineral loss, thereby preventing bone fractures and controlling the pain associated with the disease.…”

“…This explains the anti-inflammatory ability of LP in inhibiting TNF-α and COX-2. Hence, the possible mechanisms contributing to the osteoprotective effects of LP are via its antioxidative, phytoestrogenic and anti-inflammatory properties [92].…”
