The antecryst compositional influence on Cretaceous alkaline lamprophyre dykes, SE Brazil

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The question of whether the antecryst assemblage affects the bulk composition of lamprophyre dykes, and could be responsible for the compositional zonation between their centers and borders is addressed through a detailed study involving four monchiquite and camptonite dykes (basanites and tephrites) representative of the Arco de Ponta Grossa and Serra do Mar alkaline provinces. In them, antecrysts are interpreted as early-crystallized minerals that are no longer in equilibrium with their host-liquid,… Show more

“…and the calculated cell volumes (VCell>440 Å 3 , following Nimis, 1995) of the clinopyroxenes. The fO 2 buffer fixed for these models was the QFM, compatible with petrographic observations and similar to the one adopted by Trumbull et al (2003) and Menezes et al (2015). Low levels of H 2 O (1.0 wt%) and CO 2 (0.2 wt%) were assumed based on petrographic evidences.…”

“…The initial composition selected for the models corresponds to that of dike 326a, which is thought to represent a primitive non-cumulus liquid in the intrusion. Although other dikes show a more primitive composition, they are considered to represent a melt bearing an important volume of megacrysts, which could be assigned as antecrysts (Menezes et al 2015); hence, they are not a good indication of the parental magma composition. The initial T (~1200-1150ºC) of the assumed parental magma was estimated based on the pyroxene saturation thermometer (Putirka 2008).…”
