The antecedents and consequences of charitable donation heterogeneity on social media

Abstract: This study claims that donating is a rational behavior that balances altruism and self-interest; therefore, the frequency and magnitude of donating are picked as crucial criteria to classify different crowdfunders because both of them reflect the rationality of donating. This study identifies 6 clusters of crowdfunders and explores the antecedent variables of the typology based on self-system theory, as well as reveals the social influence of different types of crowdfunders.Data of the crowdfunders (n = 13,868… Show more

“…Yet, this comes at a time when trust in charities and non-profits has been in a precipitous decline in many parts of the world (Bin-Nashwan et al, 2020a). Scholars have assumed that the way charities approach donors will determine their attitudes toward donation itself, so that good transparency, communication and relation between charities and potential donors must be considered (Bin-Nashwan et al, 2020a;Sura et al, 2017;Zhong and Lin, 2018). Although it is noticed that trust is a decisive determinant, a donor with a high degree of trust is likely to be more aware of helping others and contributing to initiatives for less privileged populations, there are inconsistent results concerning the association between trust in charities and attitude toward donation.…”

“…It has more than 50 years of experience in providing charitable and emergency assistance (Elkahlout, 2020). Although the literature has examined how SMPs could help in supporting online fundraising and how charities manipulate the use of SMPs to promote the giving behavior and charitable activity (Curtis et al , 2010; Quinton and Fennemore, 2013; Zhong and Lin, 2018), internal and external motivations shaping SMP-driven donations for encountering global epidemic diseases have not yet been fully explored. With the purpose of empirically examining the intrinsic and extrinsic motivations of SMP users in donating for those affected by the COVID-19 outbreak, the present paper is structured as follows.…”

“…Cluster analysis is a highly useful tool for taxonomy description, data simplification and relationship identification (Balijepally et al, 2011). Therefore, this methodology is helpful in revealing distinct groups and profiles of respondents (Zhong and Lin, 2018) with similar level of CDB. The measures of CDB were used to cluster the groups using a hierarchical cluster analysis followed by a nonhierarchical cluster analysis K-means.…”
