The Annual Reproductive Cycle of Silurus microdorsalis, a Korean Endemic Species

Abstract: The annual reproductive cycle of the Korean endemic slender catfish, Silurus microdorsalis, was examined histologically regarding water temperature and day length of habitat, gonadosomatic index (GSI), and development characteristics of female and male gonads. The maximum GSI value was found in May, 1.23±0.33 and 11.77±3.23 for male and female respectively (habitat water temperature 21.5°C/13.59hr day length). On the other hand, the minimal level was 0.63±0.10 in July (26.5°C/14.17) for male and 1.36±0.08 in O… Show more

“…Notably, fishes represented 80.2% of vertebrate DNA at the familly level if combining Cyprinidae (50.2%), Cobitidae (17.0%), and Siluridae (13.0%). In Korea, two species of Silurus , i.e., Silurus asotus (Amur catfish) and Silurus microdorsalis (slender catfish), are known to inhabit rivers and lakes [ 42 45 ]. Similarly, Misgurnus species, such as Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (pond loach) and Misgurnus mizolepis (mud loach), and Paramisgurnus species, such as Paramisgurnus dabryanus , a senior synonym of M .…”

“…The frequency of primary spermatocyte, secondary spermatocyte and spermatid were 15%, 40%, and 35%, respectively. Most fish is spawn in the period of maximal possibility of offspring survival, since successful prosperity is the key strategy for species continuity. Fishes that inhabit middle latitude regions have seasonal spawning phase, and they repeat annually(Lee et al, 1984;Ki & Lee, 2018). The sexual maturity and annual reproductive cycles of fish are established through the value of GSI and progress of gamatogenesis in the gonads.…”

“…However, S. microdorsalis is found in only mountainous streams (Park and Kim 2005 ). Furthermore, there is a rise in the value of S. microdorsalis because of its possibility as fresh water aquaculture species (Ki and Lee 2018 ). Even if it has a value as biological resource, genetic study of S. microdorsalis is not reported.…”
