This paper documents the Late-Holocene environmental changes and human presence in the northern Danube delta using a multidisciplinary approach that combines geoscientific data with archaeological findings, historical texts, and maps. It follows the formation and progression of the Chilia distributary and the reconfiguration of socioeconomic activities. Sedimentary facies identified on five new cores by changes in texture properties, magnetic susceptibility, geochemistry, and macro- and microfauna composition together with the newly obtained chronology constrain the complex evolution of the Chilia branch as filling in a long-lasting bay and then of a giant lagoon (Thiagola) which covered most of the northern delta since the Old Danube lobe inception (ca. 7500 yrs BP) till modern Chilia development. It initiated during the Greek Antiquity (ca. 2500 yrs ar BP) at the delta apex, while in Roman times (ca. 1800 yrs BP) it pursued its slow flowing into the vast Thiagola Lagoon. The most dramatic transformations occurred in the last 800 years when the river passed east of the Chilia promontory, rapidly went through the present-day Matița-Merhei basin (several decades), and created its first open-sea outlet. Solid discharge increased in two distinct periods, once in the Middle Ages (ca. 750 yrs BP) and then in the Modern Period (ca. 150 yrs BP) due to human-induced land-use changes in the Danube watershed. The chronology of the cultural remains on the pre-deltaic Chilia promontory and the multiproxy analysis of a sediment core retrieved nearby downstream suggest the terrestrial connection of the island with the mainland in ancient times. The hitherto contended issue of the old Thiagola Lagoon and its location are redefined here, as are the original identifications of ancient and medieval toponyms and hydronyms, especially for Chilia-Licostomo, Byzantine, Genoese, Moldavian, Ottoman, and Russian trading point of great importance in the political and economic history of the Black Sea and neighboring regions.

One of the main concerns and challenges of applied hydrology is estimating the peak flood discharge for an ungauged river. The method currently used in case of rivers with small catchment areas (less than 5 km²) is the Rational Formula as it had been proposed by Diaconu (1994) using the updated values of runoff coefficients presented by Miță (2019). Taking full advantage of the tools offered by the GIS software for digitizing the spatial information of the parameters related to a river and its catchment, this paper, for the first time in literature, approaches the Rational method as it is presented by Diaconu and Miță (1997), by means of an automated method based on GIS infrastructure, which greatly increases the accuracy of the results while significantly reducing the time needed to determine the end result. Therefore, using ArcMap software, one can create the necessary raster images based on DTM (30 m resolution), CLC 2018 shapefile and soil shapefile, an automated geoprocessing workflow with the help of Model Builder for extracting the necessary parameters for the Rational Formula, which will then be integrated in a custom Excel workbook that will generate the magnitude and frequency of peak discharge at the point of interest using a log-Pearson Type III probability distribution. This method has been applied on the Romanian catchment area of Siret river, but it can be used on almost all small river basins in Romania, because the given parameters and coefficients have been determined for the entire territory.

The hydrotechnical works on Sf. Gheorghe arm in Danube Delta was done by Institute for Research and Planning for Water Management. The work was part of the framework scheme for the Dobrogea hydrographic area and was nominated in the investment plan of the National Water Council. The regularization works, started in 1988, consists in the rectification of the main meanders of the arm in the following sectors: lvancea, Dranov, Dunavăț and Murighiol. The total length of the rectification is 15 km and the shortening of the natural course is 32 km. These works impose changes in the balance of the hydrological regime on the main course, along the meanders and on the channels connecting the arm waters and the aquatic complexes within the delta. By altering the fractal dimension of the arm, fluviatile processes are intensified and have irremediable long-term repercussions. This leads to the eutrophication of lakes in the aquatic complexes by low water intake, then clogging of the channels and, also, of the lakes resulting in diminishing / changing the habitats. As clear evidence are these two channels: Ivancea and Erenciuc north (completely clogged). Now, other 4 channels are threatened, which already show very low depths at the confluence with the Sf. Gheorghe arm. This is an exhaustive study of the current situation of the meanders of the Sf. Gheorghe arm from the morphological point of view and the fragile longitudinal and lateral connectivity through morphometric analysis methods using geomatics techniques. The foundation of this study will be based on existing literature, field data, historical and current data, in collaboration with other institutes and universities capable of providing important data such as sediments, hydro-technical works, etc.
