The Analysis of Penumbral Fine Structure Using an Advanced Inversion Technique

Abstract: We present a method to study the penumbral fine structure using data obtained by the spectropolarimeter onboard HINODE. For the first time, the penumbral filaments can be considered as resolved in spectropolarimetric measurements. This enables us to use inversion codes with only one-component model atmospheres, and thus assign the obtained stratifications of plasma parameters directly to the penumbral fine structure. This approach is applied to the limb-side part of the penumbra in active region NOAA 10923. Th… Show more

“…The magnetic field strength in the upflow regions is comparable to the values reported by Sobotka & Jurčák (2009) for penumbral bright grains and also to values found for the inner penumbra by e.g., Jurčák et al (2007), Borrero et al (2006), andBellot Rubio et al (2004). The agreement with previous results make the simplified inversion trustworthy at least for the upflow structures that are spatially larger than the downflow patches.…”

“…This gives in total 19 free parameters for 329 wavelength points ×4 Stokes parameters (=1316 measurement values), which, however, are not all fully independent (see the discussion in Sánchez Almeida 2005). SIRGAUS has been used in a number of investigations (Bellot Rubio 2003;Beck 2006;Jurcák et al 2007;Cabrera Solana et al 2008;Ishikawa et al 2010). The main difference between the standard version of SIR and SIRGAUS is that spectral lines cannot be treated as blends of each other, i.e., the mutual influence of the line wings on the neighboring lines is not included.…”

“…A&A 525, A133 (2011) One of the suggested configurations for the threedimensional organization of the penumbral magnetic fields is the so-called "uncombed" penumbra (Solanki & Montavon 1993), where less inclined field lines wind around horizontal flow channels (see for instance Borrero et al 2008). This configuration has been taken up by modeling (Thomas & Montesinos 1993;Schlichenmaier et al 1998;Schlichenmaier & Collados 2002;Müller et al 2002;Borrero et al 2004;Müller et al 2006) 1 and inversion schemes since it is one of the few approaches that reproduces the observed NCP (e.g., Martínez Pillet 2000; Borrero et al 2006;Beck 2006;Jurcák et al 2007;Borrero et al 2007). Another approach reproducing the observed NCP is the so-called micro-structured magnetic atmosphere hypothesis (MISMA;Sanchez Almeida 1998;Sánchez Almeida 2001, 2005 that proposes a fine structure of the magnetic field on scales of a few km.…”

“…The inward flows are determined by the LCT method from the apparent motions of bright penumbral grains. As these structures are confined to the low photosphere (Jurčák et al 2007;Sobotka & Jurčák 2009), they are prominent in the G-band filtergrams but not in the Ca ii H images. Therefore, the inward motions are weaker and occupy smaller areas in Ca ii H. The motion patterns of the orphan penumbra are also similar in the upper and lower photosphere (Figs.…”
