The Amigo Service Architecture for the Open Networked Home Environment

Abstract: The Amigo project aims to develop a networked home system enabling the ambient intelligence / pervasive computing vision by effectively integrating devices and their hosted services in today's home. The Amigo system architecture poses limited technology-specific restrictions, supporting interoperability among heterogeneous services.

“…Moreover, to account for interoperability among devices of different vendors and to integrate established middleware technologies the Amigo middleware is based on ontologies and web services [42], [43] as inspired by the ideas of the semantic web [44]. All ontologies are formulated in the Web Ontology Language (OWL) [45], which uses a resource description framework/extensible markup language (RDF/XML) [46] notation.…”

“…A number of research projects, such as eHome [6] [7], AMIGO [1], ETRI Open Home Framework [4], have addressed challenges in home task automation. The technical problems addressed by these projects include: device and software interoperability, deployment management, and installation-time configuration.…”

“…The research on cognitive radios and dynamic spectrum access [4,5] are examples on the PHY and MAC layers, while research on publish / subscribe systems [6,7] propose disruptive mechanisms for data-centric routing. On the middleware layer, approaches towards interoperability are multitude, and the scope of deployment divides different approaches to different research areas such as large-scale grids [8], or smart spaces such as office environments [6,9], homes [10,11] or more generic public spaces [12,13].…”
