“…Although the above mentioned measures are expected to decrease the cost of LA in the near future, we feel that certain other modifications are still needed to make the existing techniques of LA more cost-effective. For example, the results of two ports 15,16 or a single 'all-in-one' port appendectomies are promising, as reported by Visnjic et al and Stylianos et al 11,17 As these studies demonstrate, the cost of a single port appendectomy is less than that of an appendectomy using 3 ports. Similarly, the use of a single ENDOLOOP® or endo stapler, 18 and avoiding the use of harmonic scalpels, are other possible ways to reduce the cost of LA.…”

“…This technique has been shown to be cost efficient, safe, quick and with excellent cosmetic outcome. 2,6 The latter can be very challenging in obese patients. As described by Knott et al the single site approach is not recommended in obese patients due to a longer operative time, longer length of stay, more doses of postop analgesics and greater costs.…”

“…The rate of surgical site infections of the transumbilical laparoscopic assisted appendectomy with extracorporeal amputation of the appendix ranges from 7.4% to 11.1%. 2,6,13 Wound infections after conventional three port laparoscopic appendectomies are less frequent ranging from 0.09 to 3.1%. 14,15 In our study only 1 patient operated by the hybrid technique developed a wound infection (1.4%).…”

“…Conversely intra-abdominal abscess was reported in 4.1% of patients in laparoscopic group and 0.32% patients of open appendectomy showing consistent results with other studies that show increase intra-abdominal abscess in laparoscopic group. 19,20 A few possible explanations to this may be an increased bacterial contamination, 21,22,23 punctilious irrigation further spreading pathogen in whole abdominal cavity without proper suction especially in case of peritonitis 24 , and inadequate leaning curve. 25 In our study this finding was not statistically significant (p=0.147).…”
