Abstract-The CMS collaboration aims at improving the muon trigger and tracking performance at the HL-LHC by installing new Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) chambers in the endcaps of the CMS experiment. Construction and commissioning of GEM chambers for the first muon endcap stations is ramping up in several laboratories using common quality control protocols. The SCRIBE framework is a scalable and cross-platform webbased application for the RD51 Scalable Readout System (SRS) that controls data acquisition and analyzes data in near real time. It has been developed mainly to simplify and standardize measurements of the GEM chamber response uniformities with x-rays across all production sites. SCRIBE works with zero suppression of raw SRS pulse height data. This has increased acquisition rates to 5 kHz for a CMS GEM chamber with 3072 strips and allows strip-by-strip response comparisons with a few hours of data taking. SCRIBE also manages parallel data reconstruction to provide near real-time feedback on the chamber response to the user. Preliminary results on the response performance of the first mass-produced CMS GEM chambers commissioned with SCRIBE are presented.

Any physics analysis at a collider experiment heavily relies on an efficient trigger system to filter out potentially interesting events. To ensure stable operation, a continuous and detailed real-time monitoring is essential. Two such online monitoring features for the Central Trigger of the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European centre for particle physics, CERN, are developed as part of this thesis and are presented in detail. To prepare the ATLAS experiment for the second run of the LHC starting in 2015, among other systems the Central Trigger hardware will be upgraded to remove resource limitations and allow for the connection of newly installed systems. This thesis reports on the corresponding changes and extensions in the simulation of the Central Trigger, the implementation of which is part of this work. A further part of this thesis presents a search for Dark Matter candidates. Cosmological observations indicate that about 80% of the matter content of the universe consist of a form of non-luminous matter which is traceable only due to its gravitational interaction and for which the Standard Model of particle physics does not provide a viable candidate. A number of experiments searches for evidence of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), that in a natural way could account for the observed present day abundance of this Dark Matter. In recent years, also the search for WIMP pair production at hadron colliders has gathered momentum. A possible signal signature at a collider is a jet originating from initial state radiation and recoiling against a pair of WIMPs, leading to events with a highly energetic jet and a large amount of missing transverse momentum due to the WIMPs leaving the detector without interacting. The signal is thus expected to manifest itself as an excess above the Standard Model prediction at large missing transverse energy (E miss T ). The search for WIMP candidates presented in this thesis uses such mono-jet events, based on 20 fb −1 of proton-proton collision data collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at a centreof-mass energy of √ s = 8 TeV. The main Standard Model backgrounds are estimated in a semi-data driven way. The event selection is optimised with respect to the sensitivity for a WIMP signal and the search is performed in eight signal regions of increasing E miss T . No significant excess is observed and model independent limits both at 90% and 95% confidence level (CL) are set on the cross section for new physics. In addition, 90% CL limits are derived on the suppression scale of an effective field theory (EFT) for various operators and compared to the results from other search experiments. The collider limits for all considered effective operators are stronger than the bounds from other experiments at low WIMP masses in the case of spinindependent interactions, and over a large mass range for spin-dependent interactions. Abstract-The ATLAS detector at CERN records particle collision "events" delivered by the Large Hadron Collider. Its data-acquisition system identifies, selects, and stores interesting events in near real-time, with an aggregate throughput of several 10 GB/s. It is a distributed software system executed on a farm of roughly 2000 commodity worker nodes communicating via TCP/IP on an Ethernet network. Event data fragments are received from the many detector readout channels and are buffered, collected together, analyzed and either stored permanently or discarded. This system, and data-acquisition systems in general, are sensitive to the latency of the data transfer from the readout buffers to the worker nodes. Challenges affecting this transfer include the many-to-one communication pattern and the inherently bursty nature of the traffic. In this paper we introduce the main performance issues brought about by this workload, focusing in particular on the so-called TCP incast pathology. Since performing systematic studies of these issues is often impeded by operational constraints related to the mission-critical nature of these systems, we focus instead on the development of a simulation model of the ATLAS data-acquisition system, used as a case study. The simulation is based on the wellestablished OMNeT++ framework. Its results are compared with existing measurements of the system's behavior. The successful reproduction of the measurements by the simulations validates the modeling approach. We share some of the preliminary findings obtained from the simulation, as an example of the additional possibilities it enables, and outline the planned future investigations.
