The Alderney Race: general hydrodynamic and particular features

Abstract: This study presents an overview of the main hydrodynamic features of the Alderney Race strait based on in situ measurements and two-dimensional hydrodynamic model simulations. The strait encompasses a large amplitude of tidal properties (tidal range and tidal wave propagation) and particularly strong currents exceeding 5 m s −1 with associated counter currents and gyres. Variations in depth, sea bottom roughness, coastal topography and current orientation around … Show more

“…These works paved the way for more recent studies such as [15][16][17]. Very recently, and crucially for this paper dealing with the Alderney Race, the results of mainly two French research programs (THYMOTE and HYD2M) were published, most of them in a special issue of the Philosophical Transaction of the Royal Society A [18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25]. All these works will be extremely valuable for the forthcoming computations applied to farm configurations in the Alderney Race and specifically for the configuration treated in the present paper.…”

“…14 m) appear in the Gulf of Mont Saint Michel, and decrease towards the north to amplitudes between 6 and 10 m in the Alderney Race. There, the mean tidal range has been shown to present large horizontal gradients that reach 0.4 m km −1 in front of Cap de La Hague [3]. Similarly, water levels show large horizontal variations due to the strong gradients generated by the presence of the Channel Islands, and contribute to accelerating the current [2].…”
