The alchemy screen-space ambient obscurance algorithm

Abstract: Figure 1: left: Environment lighting. right) Modulated by Alchemy ambient obscurance, computed from 12 samples per pixel at 1280×720 in 3 ms on GeForce 580. The algorithm is easy to tune, robust, and captures darkening at many scales and orientations. AbstractAmbient obscurance (AO) produces perceptually important illumination effects such as darkened corners, cracks, and wrinkles; proximity darkening; and contact shadows. We present the AO algorithm from the Alchemy engine used at Vicarious Visions in commerc… Show more

“…We furthermore utilize screen space effects that add illustrative aspects to the eventual rendering (Figure 6 ). Namely, we perform an outline contour enhancement and screen space ambient occlusion [ 32 ].It is important to mention that all parameters regarding the shape and the visual molecular appearance can be adjusted by the user in the process of setting up the simulation through the Unity3D GUI (Figure 7 ).

“…[ZIK98] introduced ambient obscurance, replacing the visibility function with a distance‐based falloff function. A large number of studies concerning both the approaches of obscurance and AO [MFS09, MOBH11] have since followed. After the initial screen‐space approaches appeared [Mit07, SA07], a number of new techniques improving performance and quality [BSD08, RGS09, BS09] were developed.…”
