Black bass Micropterus spp. are quintessential North American sportfishes that support economically valuable fisheries and act as keystone predators within aquatic ecosystems. Despite their prominence among North American fish fauna, a number of taxonomic designations are unresolved and novel forms continue to be identified within drainages of the southeastern USA. We review the current understanding of black bass diversity, including distributions, evolutionary histories, and phylogenetic relationships. We also provide a brief overview of the major paradigms that have been applied to black bass management and highlight an emerging focus on the conservation of black bass diversity. Black bass diversity is threatened by anthropogenic land and water use, fragmentation of fluvial habitats, historic and contemporary stocking of non‐native congeners, and climate change. Successful conservation of black bass diversity requires that management agencies prioritize the protection of native species, forms, and lineages within and across jurisdictional boundaries. Collaboration among scientists and resource managers is needed to develop practical ways to ameliorate current problems created by past and present anthropogenic alterations, while also preparing for future challenges like global climate change.

Body Shape Evolution in Sunfishes: Divergent Paths to Accelerated Rates of Speciation in the Centrarchidae

Vertebrate evolutionary radiations are the result of divergence along a variety of ecological and behavioural axes. In addition, the potential for clades to evolve along any one axis can be strongly influenced by the types and levels of phenotypic variation that are exposed to natural selection. Understanding the factors that promote and constrain morphological diversification is a central goal of evolutionary biology. Here we use the sunfishes (Centrarchidae), a perciform family containing three main clades (Lepomis, Micropterus, and a basal clade), to explore this question with respect to variation in body shape. We gathered morphological data from 26 of the 38 centrarchid species using geometric morphometrics and analyzed the resultant shape data over a time-calibrated phylogenetic tree. We find that centrarchids partitioned body shape early in their evolutionary history, a pattern that is largely associated with expansion into divergent foraging niches and elaboration of sexual ornamentation. The morphological disparity of each clade was tightly linked to integration: those clades with high disparity (Lepomis, basal clade) were the least integrated, while the opposite trend was observed in Micropterus. We also find evidence for an increase in speciation rate at the node leading to Lepomis and Micropterus, and a decline in speciation for the basal clade. Our data lead us to suggest different hypotheses for explaining accelerated speciation in Micropterus and Lepomis: invasion of a novel pursuitpredator niche that reduced resource competition (Micropterus), and the elaboration of opercular morphology (Lepomis), a trait that is linked to reproductive behaviour and facilitates mate recognition in communities with many sunfish species.

The availability of water is becoming more variable as flow regime alterations intensify both locally and on a global scale. This pattern has been observed in the tributaries of the central Chattahoochee River System as water withdrawal and natural drought have caused flows to diminish. Stream discharge has steadily decreased in the study area by 31% over the last 50 years, and during this time, fish assemblage homogenization has occurred throughout the system. Our primary objective was to assess whether spawning mode and water availability are catalysts for fish assemblage change in tributaries of the Chattahoochee River System. We found that species which prefer or have adapted to low flow conditions (e.g. blacktail shiner Cyprinella venusta, redbreast sunfish Lepomis auritus and blackbanded darter Percina nigrofasciata) are becoming dominant and replacing historically dominant fluvial specialists. When examining short‐term changes between a dry year (2009) and a wet year (2010), some species preferring higher flows such as the highscale shiner Notropis hypsilepis were detected during the wet year, suggesting that the amount of water is important for the presence of these species in upstream reaches where they were historically abundant. Species that can reproduce successfully in low flow conditions are thriving and expanding their native ranges as more habitat becomes suitable. Species that require higher flows for part of their life cycle, however, appear to be declining from upstream areas as water availability continues to decrease, despite temporary recovery from downstream refugia during wet years.
