The Alabama Bass, Micropterus henshalli (Teleostei: Centrarchidae), from the Mobile River basin

Abstract: The Alabama Bass, Micropterus henshalli, was diagnosed as a subspecies of Micropterus punctulatus from the Mobile River basin, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi, USA, by Hubbs and Bailey (1940). The species has been introduced in the Chattahoochee River, as has the Spotted Bass, Micropterus punctulatus. Micropterus henshalli differs from M. punctulatus, with which it has been aligned, by having higher scales counts, a narrower head, smaller scale width, higher gill raker count, and a smaller tooth patch. “…Subspecies‐level designations are now generally avoided (Wilson and Brown ; Near and Koppelman ), and many subspecies have since been elevated to species status (e.g., Alabama Bass M. henshalli ; Baker et al. ). In a few cases, there is debate surrounding appropriate taxonomic status (e.g., Neosho Smallmouth Bass and Florida Bass; see Notes).…”

“…These classifications included re describing Spotted Bass as a species, describing new species (e.g., Redeye Bass M. coosae and Suwannee Bass M. notius), and classifying some forms as subspecies (Alabama Spotted Bass M. punctulatus henshalli and Neosho Smallmouth Bass M. dolomieu velox;Hubbs 1927;Hubbs andBailey 1940, 1942;Bailey and Hubbs 1949). Subspecies level designations are now general ly avoided (Wilson and Brown 1953;Near and Koppelman 2009), and many subspecies have since been elevated to species status (e.g., Alabama Bass M. henshalli; Baker et al 2008). “…Most tips were assigned a value of one, although our tree contained 32 of the 38 currently known centrarchid species. We collapsed Micropterus coosae into a total of five species (Baker et al 2013), and both Micropterus punctulatus and Lepomis megalotis into two species (Baker et al 2008;Warren 2009). MEDUSA starts by fitting a birth-death, two-parameter model to the tree.…”
