“…The studies revealed that a stable decagonal phase occurs in the ternary Al-Cr-Fe [31], Al-Mn-Fe [32], Al-Cu-Mn [33] system and a metastable one in the Al-Mn-Ni system [34]. The available diagrams clearly show that both Fe and Cu take part in the quasicrystalline phase nucleation and stabilization (for example, the I-phase was found to exist at equilibrium conditions in the Al-Cu-Fe system [35][36][37] and the D-phase was found in the recently-studied Al-Mn-Fe and Al-Cu-Mn systems). This is in agreement with results obtained in this work.…”

“…However, detailed investigations show that the composition region of the stable I-phase region has been reported to narrow around Al 62 Cu 25.5 Fe 12.5 [43]. The equilibrium phase diagram of the Al-rich Al-Cu-Fe alloy system has been the subject of several earlier investigations [44][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52]. Interest in these alloys originates from the facts that a stable I-phase can be obtained in the as-cast samples and I-phase is considered to be a potential candidate for coating applications.…”

“…Although quasicrystal-forming Al-Cu-Fe alloys have been studied extensively [45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52] by many investigators, the detailed phase evolution and solidification pathways of the alloys have recently been discussed by Zhang and L€ uck [50][51][52] in a series of papers. One can aim at understanding the observed microstructures in the light of these papers.…”

“…Nowadays, engineers are investigating potential applications, which could benefit from the combination of good properties such as high hardness, low surface energy, low thermal and electrical conductivities and good corrosion properties [6][7][8][9][10][11]. The intrinsic brittleness of QC materials at temperature lower than 0.6T m (T m = melting temperature) limits their industry application.…”
