The AI Race is on! Google's Bard and Openai's Chatgpt Head to Head: An Opinion Article

In the academic world, academicians, researchers, and students have already employed Large Language Models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT to complete their various academic and non-academic tasks, including essay writing, different formal and informal speech writing, summarising literature, and generating ideas. However, yet, it is a controversial issue to use ChatGPT in academic research. Recently, its impact on academic research and publication has been scrutinized. The fundamental objective of this study is to highlight the application of ChatGPT in academic research by demonstrating a practical example with some recommendations. Data for this study was gathered using published articles, websites, blogs, and visual and numerical artefacts. We have analyzed, synthesized, and described our gathered data using an "introductory literature review." The findings revealed that for the initial idea generation for academic scientific research, ChatGPT could be an effective tool. However, in the case of literature synthesis, citations, problem statements, research gaps, and data analysis, the researchers might encounter some challenges. Therefore, in these cases, researchers must be cautious about using ChatGPT in academic research. Considering the potential applications and consequences of ChatGPT, it is a must for the academic and scientific community to establish the necessary guidelines for the appropriate use of LLMs, especially ChatGPT, in research and publishing.

On ChatGPT: what promise remains for multiple choice assessment?

Multiple-choice quizzes (MCQs) are a popular form of assessment. A rapid shift to online assessment during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, drove the uptake of MCQs, yet limited invigilation and wide access to material on the internet allow students to solve the questions via internet search. ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) agent trained on a large language model, exacerbates this challenge as it responds to information retrieval questions with speed and a good level of accuracy. In this opinion piece, I contend that while the place of MCQ in summative assessment may be uncertain, current shortcomings of ChatGPT offer opportunities for continued formative use. I outline how ChatGPT’s limitations can inform effective question design. I provide tips for effective multiple-choice question design and outline implications for both academics and learning developers. This piece contributes to emerging debate on the impact of artificial intelligence on assessment in higher education. Its purpose is threefold: to (1) enhance academics’ understanding of effective MCQ design, (2) promote shared understanding and inform dialogue between academics and learning developers about MCQ assessment, and (3) highlight the potential implications on learning support.

Exploring the Capabilities and Limitations of ChatGPT and Alternative Big Language Models

ChatGPT, an AI-powered chatbot developed by OpenAI, has gained immense popularity since its public launch in November 2022. With its ability to write essays, emails, poems, and even computer code, it has become a useful tool for professionals in various fields. However, ChatGPT's responses are not always rooted in reality and are instead generated by a GAN. This paper aims to build a text classification model for a chatbot using Python. The model is trained on a dataset consisting of customer responses to a survey and their corresponding class labels. Many classifiers are trained and tested, such as Naive Bayes, Random Forest, Extra Trees, and Decision Trees. The results show that the Extra Trees classifier performs the best with an accuracy of 90%. The system demonstrates the importance of text preprocessing and selecting appropriate classifiers for text classification tasks in building an effective chatbot. In this paper, we also explore the capabilities and limitations of ChatGPT and its alternatives in 2023. We present a comprehensive overview of the alternative's performance. The work here, concludes with a discussion of the future directions of large language models and their impact on society and technology.
