The aging kidney

Abstract: Renal aging, by itself, is associated with alterations in renal morphology and a decline in renal function, which is accelerated and/or accentuated by diseases such as diabetes mellitus and hypertension. The aging-related renal insufficiency has important implications with regards to body homeostasis, drug toxicity, and renal transplantation. An understanding of renal aging and its distinction from renal insufficiency secondary to diseases is essential for individualized care of the elderly. Toward this end, i… Show more

“…Kidney function is known to decline with age and is exacerbated by an age-related occurrence of increased insulin resistance, inflammation, and oxidative stress (8). With regard to dietary modifications, caloric restriction (CR) has proven to be the most efficacious mode of protecting against the onset of age-related kidney damage in rodent models (24).…”

“…With increasing age, the kidney is less effective at concentrating or diluting urine and more likely to retain salt, and these dysfunctions are associated with age-associated histological changes (8). In order to investigate the effect of MR diet on the ageing kidney, renal histology was assessed in mice which had been fed the MR or control diet for a prolonged period of 190 days.…”

“…62 The presence of underlying diseases, such as hypertension and diabetes, may accelerate the pathological alterations observed in aging kidneys. 2 The intimal hyperplasia in the interlobular arteries may allow for the transmission of abnormal arterial pulse waves into the smaller distal branches. 63,64 These arterial pulse waves can lead to hyaline changes in the arterioles, resulting in an acceleration of the intimal fibrosis.…”
