“…The total collagen content has also been shown to increase in denervated ( Vecchioni and Tartarini, 1961), senile dystrophic (Lowry et ai, 1942;Dreyfus et ai, 1954), and work-induced hypertrophic (Bartsova et al, 1969) muscles of rats. The present results which show an increase in total collagen in the cardiac muscle is similar to the results of Schaub (1964a) and Knorring (1970). However, other investigators (Oken and Boucek, 1957;Laves and Correl, 1960;Montfort and Perez-Tamayo, 1962;Wegelius and Knorring, 1964) have observed no definite post natal change in the total collagen content of the myocardium.…”

“…Our results regarding the changes of the collagen content of the uterus in connection with age are in complete agreement with the data of Schaub 11964/65]. Similar changes were verified by V er za r and M eyer [1961] in tendons, by Verzar [1960] in the skin, by Schaub [1963a] in striated muscles and in the myocardium [1964], and in the parenchymal organs [1963b].…”

“…Schaub (1963) and Mohan and Radha (1975) have already reported such changes in ageing rat striated muscle. Evidence for increased cross-links in aged mammalian cardiac muscle have also been derived (Tomanek etal., 1972).…”

“…On the basis of present findings and earlier reports on other vertebrate species it is probable that there may be a common pattern of collagen ageing in vertebrates even though the rate of ageing may differ from species to species. A compari son of degree of accumulation of collagen (insoluble and total) in ageing rat skeletal muscle (Schaub, 1963;Mohan and Radha, 1975) with that of lizard reveals that the rate is higher in the reptilian species than the mammalian. This might suggest greater limitation of motor performance in aged reptilian muscle.…”
