Central Europe is an area of high diversity for the Talpidae (Eulipotyphla, Mammalia) during the Late Miocene. The assemblages from Slovakia (Borský Svätý Jur, Krásno, Pezinok, Šalgovce, Studienka, Triblavina) are no exception with their abundant material representing eleven species. The uropsiline Desmanella is represented by D. rietscheli and D. dubia. Desmanini fossils are attributed to Archaeodesmana vinea, Archaeodesmana dissona new species, Gerhardstorchia biradicata, and Gerhardstorchia sp. The scalopines Proscapanus minor and P. austriacus are well recorded in the Vallesian localities and support the emergence of P. austriacus before the MN9/10 transition. Talpini and Urotrichini are especially rare and only represented by Talpa cf. T. minuta and Urotrichini gen. sp. indet. Finally, we identified the youngest occurrence of Desmanodon in Europe, D. cf. D. fluegeli, at the MN9 locality of Borský Svätý Jur. The high diversity in the Late Miocene Central European is partly explained by the co-occurrence of the competing Scalopini and Talpini during the Vallesian, indicating high resource environments. The Middle Miocene was a warmer and wetter interval than present-day (Steinthorsdottir et al., 2021). In the UK, the most extensive Middle Miocene deposit is the Serravallian Kenslow Member of the Brassington Formation as exposed at Bees Nest Pit, near Brassington, Derbyshire, UK. While known to contain a diverse palynological and palaeobotanical record, the stratigraphical distribution of these fossils has not been studied in detail, thus biome variations through a most important proxy period are very poorly understood. This important unit has never been the subject of a detailed, multi-sample study. Here we present a 58-sample record covering 133 cm of clay and lignite. The results comprise the first reconstruction of a bog succession in the Miocene palaeobotanical record of the UK. A predominant warm-temperate and mixed mesophytic forest biome was present. Within this forest, the local wetland developed in response to environmental changes that were not related to any major climatic shift. This wetland development produced a relatively open shrub and reed-dominated mire which produced the lignite-precursor peat. The limited extent of the lignite lentil and its position adjacent to a preserved fallen tree suggests that the peat was deposited in a tree throw, although it is not possible to rule out a slightly deeper stagnant pond within the overall wetland environment.

The lower Turolian (MN11) assemblage of rodents collected from new temporal outcrop near Triblavina (Danube Basin, Western Slovakia) is described. Fossils were collected from at least 2.5 tons of sediment that was wet sieved on a set of stable sieves. The mesh size of the lower sieve was 0.5 mm and the residue was not treated with acids for the sake of preserving mollusk shells. Fossil remains were picked manually from residue under the stereo-microscope. More than 170 teeth of small mammals were recovered. The rodent assemblage consists of 87 identifiable teeth belonging to ten taxa: Apodemus lugdunensis, Kowalskia sp., Epimeriones austriacus, Eozapus intermedius, Spermophilinus sp., Myomimus dehmi, Vasseuromys pannonicus, Keramidomys ermannorum, Keramidomys sp. and Eomyops sp. Fauna of rodents from Triblavina is described in detail here and these data are associated with recent article [1].
