The genus Humidophila is mainly characterized by small cells, striae often composed by one elongated areola occluded by thin hymenes. Species are distributed globally and are common in moist sub-aerial habitats. We identified five Humidophila species found in the well-conserved freshwater bodies and subaerial wet habitats from the mountain region "Mananciais da Serra". Four previously known species (Humidophila brekkaensis, H. contenta, H. nienta, H. paracontenta) and one new species (Humidophila piraquarae sp. nov.) were described and illustrated based on light and scanning electron microscopy observations. Humidophila piraquarae sp. nov. is similar to H. nienta (Carter) Lowe, Kociolek, Johansen, Van de Vijver, Lange-Bertalot et Kopalová and H. undulata Lowe, Kociolek, Johansen, Van de Vijver, Lange-Bertalot et Kopalová, but is best distinguished by their prominent constriction, apices broadly rostrate-rounded, striae density, raised siliceous thickening in the apical region of the axial area, and raphe proximal endings laterally expanded in anchorshaped depressions. Addtionally, a list of Humidophila taxa already registered in Brazil is presented.

During the warm middle Eocene (ca 45 Ma), the Napartulik area (also called 'the Geodetic Hills'), Axel Heiberg Island, northern Canada (Nunavut), was vegetated with mixed broad-leaved deciduous angiosperm and evergreen conifer forests over extensive floodplain and forested wetland habitats. Massive organic rich sedimentary successions and encapsulated in-situ tree trunks suggest these forests were drowned by frequent flooding events. The sedimentary layers contain sub-fossil amber that was produced by representatives of the Pinaceae such as Pseudolarix. The amber offered an opportunity to investigate aerial plankton and thus the chance to discover microfossils, which could provide evidence of biotic interactions associated with, or the cause of, the forest die-offs. Fifty-four amber samples were subjected to a solvent treatment for microfossil extraction followed by light microscopy, resulting in the discovery of several hundred microfossils. Unexpectedly, one-quarter of the microfossils were diatoms, which may predominantly have lived on the tree bark. Fungal spores were rare, and the pollen grains found corroborated earlier findings in litter or coal. The records of fungal spores and arthropod remains were insignificant and could, therefore, not substantially have been contributing to the forest die-offs. More resin analyses from the complete sedimentary profile would be needed to get a clearer picture of putative forest pests and prevailing environmental conditions

In the areas of medium mountains, including the landscape of the Low Beskids, turf communities guarantee the biodiversity increasing the value of open landscape and protecting soil from erosion. The aim of this study was to show the diversity of the diatom communities from the Eunotia and Pinnularia genera developing on soils under the conditions of varied landscape use (meadows, pastures, fallow lands). The research was carried out within the catchment area of the Ryjak stream in the Magura National Park, together with the buffer zone at three sites. The water content varied in the studied soils with fluctuating moisture content depending on the season and the research year. On the other hand, the pH values indicated high acidification of the studied soils. The diatomaceous analysis showed numerous occurrences of the Eunotia (12 taxa) and Pinnularia (18 taxa) genera. The acid pH of the soil undoubtedly favored the development of diatoms of these genera. Most species of the Eunotia and Pinnularia genera usually developed individually, except for Pinnularia borealis Ehrenberg and P. obscura Krasske. They are typically soil species; therefore, they often dominated in the material and occurred in most of the research seasons. Apart from cosmopolitan diatoms, rare or endangered taxa from the Red List of the algae in Poland (Siemińska et al. 2006) were also found on soils. Four species belonged to the endangered category (E): Eunotia botuliformis F. Wild, Nörpel & Lange-Bert., Pinnularia nodosa (Ehrenberg) Smith, P. schoenfelderi and P. viridiformis Krammer. Canonical analysis (CCA) demonstrated a rather low statistical significance of the impact of environmental parameters (pH and humidity) on the differentiation of diatom communities. It only confirmed the fact that diatoms develop better in the environment with permanent or at least periodic moisture, compared to the dry habitats.
