The Adult Netherlands Twin Register: Twenty-Five Years of Survey and Biological Data Collection

Abstract: Over the past 25 years, the Adult Netherlands Twin Register (ANTR) has collected a wealth of information on physical and mental health, lifestyle, and personality in adolescents and adults. This article provides an overview of the sources of information available, the main research findings, and an outlook for the future. Between 1991 and 2012, longitudinal surveys were completed by twins, their parents, siblings, spouses, and offspring. Data are available for 33,957 participants, with most individuals having … Show more

“…Data for the present study came from participants in The Netherlands Twin Register Biobank pro jects, which took place between 2004 and 2008, and in 2011 [29][30][31]. After excluding outliers (i.e., absolute values exceeding mean ± 5 × standard deviation [SD]), NLR and PLR data were available for 9434 participants, clustered in 3411 families.…”

“…Venous blood samples were drawn in the morning after an overnight fast, and multiple ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) tubes were collected for isolation of DNA and RNA and assessment of hematological profiles. Phenotyping through longitudinal surveys and blood sampling procedures have been described in detail previously (Boomsma et al, 2006;van Beijsterveldt et al, 2013;Willemsen et al, 2010Willemsen et al, , 2013.…”

“…The Netherlands Twin Register was established in 1987 and the NTR survey studies and the NTR BioBank project are described elsewhere (Boomsma et al, 2002(Boomsma et al, , 2006Willemsen et al, 2010Willemsen et al, , 2013. Genome-wide methylation in blood was profiled using the Infinium 450K platform (Van Dongen et al, 2015).…”
