The adult eosinophilic oesophagitis quality of life questionnaire: a new measure of health-related quality of life

Abstract: SUMMARY BackgroundEosinophilic oesophagitis (EoO) is a chronic disease characterised by significant symptoms and challenging treatment regimens. Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is a useful way to direct patient care. EoO symptoms and treatment may impact patient HRQOL. Currently, there is no reliable and valid measure of adult EoO patient HRQOL.

“…Patients may have stress over their symptoms, fear of food impaction and stigma over this relatively new diagnosis. Some adult patients may modify their eating behavior or avoid social situations where eating is involved so as to avoid a food impaction [10]. This behavioral modification may lead to a delay in the time to seek medical attention in some adults, leading to a delay in diagnosis.…”

“…In a recent study relying on semistructured interviews regarding adult patients' experiences with the illness, patients expressed their concerns about the disease, their difficulty swallowing and the impact of EoE on their social interactions [47]. As a result of these findings, these same researchers developed the Adult Eosinophilic oesophagitis QoL questionnaire as a reliable, disease-specific measure of health-related QoL based on 37 items with five subscales: eating/dietary impact, social impact, emotional impact, disease anxiety and choking anxiety [48].…”

“…There exist several reasons for treating active EoE: first, to reduce EoE-related symptoms and to improve EoE-related quality of life [18,19], and second, in the long run, to reduce or prevent esophageal remodeling processes that are associated with stricture formation and food bolus impaction. The therapy options for treating EoE can be summarized as the "3 D's," which stands for "drugs, diet, and dilation."…”
