The Adsorption of Gases by Solids

Abstract: This volume deals with the occurrence, production, and physical properties of metallic aluminum. The section on its occurrence includes an account of the aluminum minerals, including silicates, and contains a long section on bauxite and laterite, which are used in the technical production of the metal. The section on the production of the metal deals briefly with the older chemical methods and in detail with the electrolytic processes now in use, and with refining processes. The forms of commercial aluminum ar… Show more

“…It was there that he became acquainted with the work of Dr. D.H. Bangham and his colleagues (notably Fred Maggs) in the British Coal Utilisation Laboratories at Leatherhead. Dr. Bangham had applied the Gibbs adsorption equation to gas-solid systems and Gregg realized that he could use the integrated Gibbs equation to demonstrate the similarity of changes of state of the adsorbed layers on solids and water (Gregg 1942).…”

“…Within the space of only 120 pages, a Methuen's monograph on The Adsorption of Gases by Solids (Gregg 1934) gave a remarkably perceptive account of gas adsorption. At this time, very little was known about multilayer adsorption or the mechanisms of pore filling, and most experimentalists were content to apply either the basic Langmuir equation or the Kelvin equation.…”

“…A great amount of theoretical work has been carried out in the field of adsorption (l2, 28,29,34,44,45,64,66,68,70,86,97). Adsorption has been explained on the basis of the monolayer (or monomolecular), multilayer, capillary condensation.…”

“…A brief review of early investigations concerned with adsorption kinetics "was given by Gregg (44). Texts by McBaiil (68) and Brunauer (12) presented the kinetics of physical adsorption including the theory of adsorption rates.…”
