The Adipose Tissue Macrophages Central to Adaptive Thermoregulation

Abstract: White fat stores excess energy, and thus its excessive expansion causes obesity. However, brown and beige fat, known as adaptive thermogenic fat, dissipates energy in the form of heat and offers a therapeutic potential to counteract obesity and metabolic disorders. The fat type-specific biological function is directed by its unique tissue microenvironment composed of immune cells, endothelial cells, pericytes and neuronal cells. Macrophages are major immune cells resident in adipose tissues and gained particul… Show more

“…Based on our observations, we suggest that the reported cold-induced accumulation of adiponectin in adipose tissue [39] amplifies the effects of SNS activation by enhancing the sympathetic innervation. While M2-type macrophages may not be essential for enhancing the catecholamine production [51], they may still play an important role in thermogenic activation of adipose tissue as recently reviewed in [52].…”

“…[ 151b,152 ] Mechanistically, Plexin A4 overexpressed in Mecp2‐deleted CX3CR1 + macrophages seemed to interact with and block the outgrowth of Semaphorin 6A‐positive sympathetic axons in the tissue. [ 151b,153 ]…”

“…Furthermore, the secretion of IL-27 appears to be a major pathway of promoting thermogenesis in fat cells [ 8 ]. Macrophages contribute to the regulation of thermogenesis in response to cold exposure [ 9 ]. There is no homogeneous distribution of macrophage subtypes.…”
