“…However, in the NICE guideline arts therapies review, 6 no such distinction is made between modalities. The positive results in studies in that review, which included small-scale studies both on BPT 12 and art therapy, 37,38 have not been replicated in either the present trial or in the MATISSE study, 8 which were both much larger. Therefore, although the findings of this study and the MATISSE study 8 do not necessarily preclude the possibility that different types of arts therapies (such as music therapy) may still be effective, they are not consistent with the current NICE recommendation that all types of arts therapies should be considered as a treatment for negative symptoms or schizophrenia, and, furthermore, do not support the evidence on which the NICE recommendation was initially based.…”

“…Of the six studies included in the NICE review, 6 three studies [12][13][14] evaluated the effectiveness of music therapy, two studies 15,16 evaluated the effectiveness of art therapy and one study 17 evaluated the effectiveness of body-orientated psychotherapy. The BPT trial was an exploratory RCT, which tested a manualised form of the intervention in outpatients with persistent negative symptoms of schizophrenia.…”

“…85,86 In a recent study, 37 patients with schizophrenia were examined and randomly assigned into two different groups -one of which, in addition to receiving all the care and treatments for the specific disease, was enrolment into music therapy programs. 87 The obtained results highlighted the importance of music therapy in reducing the negative symptoms among schizophrenic patients as well as improving their sense of self and their interpersonal contacts. These positive effects underscore the potential usefulness of music therapy as a tool to foster social development and to improve the adaptive capacity of patients after discharge from the hospital.…”
