Abstract:This is the editorial piece of the Frontiers Research Topic The adaptive value of languages: Non–linguistic causes of language diversity, Vol. II. The contributions to this RT explore the possibility that linguistic and extralinguistic factors are constrained in systematic ways, and ultimately, that the latter contribute to the vast language diversity that we observe today.
