The AD8

Abstract: The AD8 is a brief, sensitive measure that reliably differentiates between nondemented and demented individuals. Use of the AD8 in conjunction with a brief assessment of the participant could improve diagnostic accuracy in general practice.

“…In particular, the time expended on data acquisition is becoming an increasingly important factor in many health systems. Primarily because previous informantbased questionnaires on cognitive changes were deemed too time-consuming, Galvin et al (2005) developed the 8-item AD8, a brief informant interview to detect dementia. Here we demonstrate that the IQCODE can be reduced from 16 to 7 items with no loss in diagnostic accuracy, thereby obviating the concern expressed by Galvin et al regarding the length of the IQCODE.…”

“…The participants self-completed the Alzheimer's Disease 8 (AD8) questionnaire for subjective cognitive impairment and were assessed with the MMSE for objective cognitive impairment by a neuropsychologist. 32,33 Participants with AD8 Ͼ2 or MMSE Ͻ26 were excluded. Eighty-one participants without subjective or objective cognitive impairment were selected for further genetic analysis, from which 12 APOE4 carriers, all 3/4 heterozygous, and 69 non-APOE4 carriers were found.…”

“…16 Relatives' report of memory deterioration also appears to accurately detect mild cognitive impairment even in the absence of measurable neuropsychological deficits. 8,[51][52][53] It is not clear that new neuropsychological subtypings of MCI lead to any increase in predictive ability. 54 There is growing evidence that signs and symptoms of vascular disease are important risks for dementia, and even for AD.…”
